M 1 Maxpedition Waistpack

Maxpedition Waistpack
I picked up an M 1 Maxpedition Waistpack along with a lower priced version of it the other day to do a side-by-side comparison of the two and see how the Maxpedition holds up to the cheaper brand.  It turned out to be a pretty revealing little comparison and I am going to share what I found with you.  You can also check out my other page on the Maxpedition Waistpack.

M 1 Maxpedition Waistpack

M 1 Maxpedition Waistpack
Pictured here to the left is the M 1 Maxpedition Waistpack.  One of the first things I noticed when comparing with the other brand is that the buckle is affixed firmly to the front flap.  This makes it much easier to close and buckle with one hand.  Since I use this pack for work, I tend to go into this front pocket pretty frequently throughout my shift, and this makes a big difference when you have to use it often.

Another thing to notice here is that the front flap also has velcro to secure it closed.  The nice thing about this is that the velcro patch is rather large, so if you have oversized tools in the pocket (like I do), you can still get the front flap closed via the velcro.  Plus, the buckle is adjustable, so you can let some strap out to accomodate.

Cheaper Brand Waistpack

You'll notice here on the cheaper brand that buckle is sewn to the front flap with a strap.  This makes it a little more difficult to buckle with one hand especially if you are having to open it pretty frequently.

This pouch also has the oversized velcro patch so that you can have a little bit of an oversized load in the front pocket.  The buckle is adjustable as well.  This is a really nice feature.

As a side note, you can really tell the difference in durability when holding these two packs side by side.  The Maxpedition Waistpack is made out of 1000 Denier Cordura while the cheaper brand is made of 600 Denier Cordura.  You can really feel the difference in the fabric.  The Maxpedition just feels way more durable.

Collapsing The Maxpedition Waistpack

Picture
Maxpedition Waistpack Shock
One feature that both of the packs have that I have found to be a lot more useful than I thought it would be, is the collapsing feature via the shock cord.  Since I use this pack at work, I am wearing it all the time and I work around equipment that has lots of wires and cables sticking out.  It would not be good for a wire to get caught on the pack while I am walking by and it get yanked out.  Being able load my pack, pull the shock cord to make the pack collapse in tight, and secure it makes it much better for me to walk around with.  Plus, I notice that I don't hit as often with my arm while walking.  It really turned out to be a nice little bonus.

M 1 Maxpedition Waistpack Back

Picture
Maxpedition Waistpack Back
Here you can see the back of the M 1 Maxpedition Waistpack.  It is kind of hard to tell from this picture, but there is a large slot behind the MOLLE attachments to allow a belt to pass through.  This is how I wear it on my belt.  But you can also attach it to your large backpack or whatever else via the MOLLE attach points.  The thing I really like about this belt slot, is that it holds the pack tight up against your body.  This makes a huge difference when going in and out of it often.

It also has a little secret pocket between the first and second MOLLE attachments.  It is a small pocket but great for stashing some emergency cash, or phone numbers, etc.

Cheap Brand Back

Picture
This is the back of the cheaper brand waistpack.  The first thing I don't like about this is how it attaches to your belt.  Those two MOLLE type straps that snap at the bottom are it.  Those are the only way to attach it to your belt and I don't like it.  It makes it loose and kind of just hangs from your belt.  Not to mention, there is no telling how long those snaps will last.

Also, no secret pocket!!  Come on now, everyone likes secret pockets!!
